Boston Aztec Announce a Second Team in 2010, Breakers Reserve Team Remains

Beverly, MA (December 19, 2009) –
It is another season of firsts for Boston Aztec in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The organization today announced that the league approved fielding two Boston Aztec teams in 2010. For the second year, the Aztecs first team will serve as the reserves for the Boston Breakers of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). The Aztecs will also field a second team, the Aztec U23s, comprised exclusively of college players.

In 2009 the Boston Aztec first team finished tied for first place in the Eastern Division with the eventual national champion Long Island Fury. The relationship also paid off for the Breakers, who signed Sophia Mundy and Mary-Frances Monroe from the Aztecs to their roster. Monroe remains on the roster for the 2010 season.

“The relationship as the Breaker’s reserve team in 2009 was a very positive experience.” said Boston Aztec General Manager Brandon Nelson. “We’re expecting 2010 to be even more successful, on the field and in the local communities.”

Going back to the origins of the Aztec teams from 2005-2008, the organization will also field the Aztec U23s. The team will consist entirely of college student athletes. The Aztec U23 team was crowned champions of the local Eastern Mass Women’s Soccer League in 2009.

“We’re extremely excited to bring our U23 team back to the WPSL,” said Mike Kersker, Boston Aztec President. “We are the only Massachusetts soccer organization that starts programming at 18 months old and continues through youth teams to college-based and professional-based teams. We’re very proud of the fact that players can now spend their entire soccer career in the Aztec family.”

Boston Aztec has featured amateur adult men's teams since 2002 and amateur women's teams since 2005. The previous highlight for the program came in 2005 when the men won the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL) National Championship. The Aztec men’s first team is taking a hiatus from the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) in 2010, eyeing a return for the 2011 season. The Aztec U23 men will again play in the Eastern Mass Men’s Soccer Association in 2010. The men won the EMMSA championship in 2009.
