7-27-08 - Aztecs fall in epic OT playoff match:
After a 6-3-1 regular season and second place in the NPSL's Northeastern Conference North Division, a penalty kick by Academy defender Tom Lobben in the 119th minute gave the Long Island Academy a 3-2 overtime victory over the Boston Aztecs in the National Premier Soccer League playoffs. The Academy advanced to the NPSL Final Four at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale.

Although the weather was dismal, the game started brightly for the Academy when Jose Batista scored from 10 yards in the 3rd minute after Shaun Higgins' dribble hugged the goal line and he passed back to an open Batista. Gustavo Dias made it 2-0 in the 26th minute when he received a square pass from Batista and found the net from six yards. A 12-yard strike by the Aztecs' Mike DeSantis found the corner of the net past sprawling Academy keeper Billy Gatti in the 83rd minute. Matt Lemire's 10-yard header off a corner kick in the 89th minute knotted the score with Peter Antoniades getting the assist.

Long Island hosted the 2008 NPSL Championships Final Four on August 1st & August 3rd. They lost 4-2 to the Midwest Champion St. Paul Twin Stars, who earned a spot in the final four by defeating Southeast Champion Atlanta FC, 3-2. The Northwest Champion Sonoma County Sol defeated defending NPSL Champion and 2008 Southwest Champions San Diego United 3-1 to get to the final round, but lost to the Pennsylvania Stoners 3-1 in the semi's, who reached the final four by beating the New York Athletic Club, second place in the Northeast Conference's Mid-Atlantic Division, 2-1 in the regional playoffs. Pennsylvania won its first NPSL Championship 3-0 over St. Paul. It should be noted their only loss all year was to the Boston Aztecs.
